Almost Every Nintendo Switch 1 Game Works For Nintendo Switch 2, But Some Have Issues
Apr 03, 2025 am 09:05 AMNintendo Switch 2 backwards compatibility: Nearly all Switch games playable, but some issues remain.
Nintendo has confirmed extensive backwards compatibility for the Switch 2, with over 15,000 Switch 1 titles expected to work. However, some games will experience compatibility problems.
While the vast majority of Switch games will be playable on the new console, initial testing reveals some titles with issues requiring further updates. Nintendo reports three categories: fully compatible, currently problematic, and entirely incompatible.
Currently, only one first-party Nintendo title, Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit, is incompatible due to the Switch 2's larger size and incompatibility with the VR goggles. Several third-party games, including Warframe, Fortnite, and Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, are experiencing various issues under investigation.
Compatibility Challenges:
A significant number of third-party Switch games show compatibility problems. Some fail to launch, others encounter in-game glitches, and many require further testing. Only slightly over 20% of third-party titles are currently fully compatible. Games currently under testing may ultimately prove fully compatible. Furthermore, many Switch games are receiving Switch 2 versions, impacting the original versions' compatibility status. For example, Fortnite's compatibility listing notes a planned Switch 2 version.
Analysis:
With only one first-party incompatibility, Nintendo appears prioritizing first-party compatibility to bolster the Switch 2's launch lineup. The company is likely working to resolve third-party issues to ensure a broad appeal. Despite the Switch 2's enhanced power, its battery life remains comparable to the original Switch. The strong anticipated third-party support suggests Nintendo will strive for maximum compatibility.
