Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Game Cards Work On Switch 1, According To Publisher
Apr 20, 2025 am 11:21 AMNintendo Switch 2 game cards, such as those for Tears of the Kingdom and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, will be backward compatible with the original Switch, according to a third-party publisher. While the original Switch won't receive the Switch 2 upgrades included in the "Switch 2 Edition" releases, the games will still be playable.
Marvelous Games' FAQ for Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma confirms this cross-compatibility. The FAQ states that inserting the Switch 2 Edition cartridge into either console will automatically launch the correct version. Nintendo previously confirmed the full game would be on the cartridge, eliminating download requirements, but cross-compatibility remained unclear until now.
Enhanced Sharing and Playability
This cross-compatibility significantly enhances game sharing. Friends and family can exchange Switch 2 Edition cartridges, and the console will automatically run the appropriate version. However, Switch 2-exclusive features and upgrades, like the weapon repair in the Zelda Notes app for Breath of the Wild's Switch 2 Edition, will only be available on the Switch 2.
Pricing and Upgrade Considerations
This feature mirrors Xbox's Smart Delivery, allowing access to the optimal version regardless of console. However, unlike Smart Delivery's free upgrades, Switch 2 Editions are pricier than their Switch 1 counterparts, with a $10 upgrade cost in most regions. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers receive free upgrades for select titles, including some Zelda games.
While this backward compatibility is a welcome feature for Switch 1 owners, the added cost of Switch 2 Edition upgrades remains a significant factor for consumers considering a purchase. The decision of whether or not to upgrade to a Switch 2 will likely remain largely unchanged by this news.
