One of the latest interesting features of the iPhone is the ambient music player, which, as the name implies, plays ambient music. This neat audio feature is available with iOS 18.4, and the Ambient Music Player offers four different ambient music types: sleep, relaxation, work, and physical and mental health.
While the ambient music player is free to use and seems to be related to Apple Music, it is unique in that it doesn't play through the music app and there are no dedicated apps to play. Instead, the ambient music player on the iPhone is mysteriously hidden in optional parts of the control center, so it's easy to overlook or even notice. Still, if you like to play gentle beats and music while working, focusing or resting, you might appreciate and love this feature, and you might want to take a moment to see how it works.
Read on and we'll show you how to add an ambient music player to the iPhone Control Center for quick and easy access.
How to access the ambient music player on iPhone to play ambient music
You need to update your iPhone to iOS 18.4 or later to access this feature.
anywhere on your iPhone, swipe down from the upper right corner to access the Control Center, and then click the plus button on the corner
Now click "Add Control" at the bottom of the Control Center
Scroll to the "Ambient Music" section in the control options and click Add each ambient music type separately (there are currently four)
Arrange the ambient music switches in the control center as needed
Return to the Control Center, click any ambient music button to start playing this type of ambient music
After the ambient music player plays, if you click on the widget played in the Control Center, or directly click on the Dynamic Island widget (for compatible iPhones), you will go directly to an ambient music player app that otherwise cannot be accessed in any other way. If you know another way to launch the ambient music player application directly, please share it with us in the comments. The app looks a lot like Apple Music, but to be clear, the ambient music player is not Apple Music, and listening to and using ambient music does not require an Apple Music or Apple Music subscription.
Once you enter the mysterious interface of the Ambient Music Player app (non-app) you can use AirPlay to send audio to other speakers, skip front and rear tracks, and perform what other music and media players usually do.
Any time you want to use or listen to ambient music in the ambient music player, you must start a music session through the Control Center as described above.
For those who are unfamiliar, ambient music is a unique genre designed to create an atmosphere, trigger emotions or feelings, rather than having a typical beat or melody. It is designed to create a peaceful and meditative atmosphere, often superimposed with different sounds, which makes it the ideal background music for working, relaxing, thinking, sleeping or anything else you might want to do without getting disturbed.
Some of the most popular videos and music streams on the web are ambient music playlists for learning, relaxing and focusing, often with hundreds of millions or even billions of listening volumes, so this feature may be designed to meet this need directly on your iPhone without the need to use a third-party app or get irritated by annoying YouTube ads every few minutes.
Currently, the Ambient Music Player is only available through the iPhone Control Center for iOS 18.4 or later, but this feature may be extended to other devices in the near future, and may even have its own dedicated app (because it already has some kind of app interface, so that's not impossible). However, it is worth pointing out that the HomePod and HomePod mini are able to play background sounds such as white noise, rain, and waves, while the iPhone, iPad and Mac also have separate "background sound" white noise features as part of the accessibility options. There are obvious similarities between "background sound" and "environmental music player" that are merged and available in the same location, perhaps a unique application that can be used throughout the Apple ecosystem, which is not impossible.
