Apple has launched a feature named Voice Isolation for iPhone cellular calls aimed at improving the experience of making phone calls, especially in environments with loud or distracting background sounds.
As the name suggests, Voice Isolation emphasizes the sound of your voice rather than other noises that may be captured by the iPhone microphone from the surrounding area.
If you've ever been on a call with someone near a leaf blower, vacuum cleaner, engine revving, dishes being washed, or involved in other typical activities, you can probably already picture how useful it will be to focus on the voice and use isolation techniques. This should enhance the clarity and focus of your calls. Keep reading to find out how to activate this somewhat hidden function.
How to Enable Voice Isolation During iPhone Cellular Calls
To activate Voice Isolation, you must be currently engaged in a cellular phone conversation. Once turned on, the function uses machine learning to differentiate between ambient sounds and your voice, highlighting your voice during the call. This should help improve the quality of voice communication during iPhone calls and reduce environmental distractions.
Ensure the Phone app is open and you're on an active cellular call, whether you initiated the call or answered it
Swipe down from the top right corner to access Control Center on your iPhone
Tap on the Mic Mode button located at the top of the screen
Select “Voice Isolation” from the list of available options to turn on this function
Once Voice Isolation is enabled, the person on the other end of the line should notice a significant improvement in call quality if there’s ambient noise present, whether you're using a shower, blender, drill, chainsaw, motorbike, or anything else that might create noise and cause distraction. It also helps in filtering out background music and other ambient sounds.
This is such a handy function that it would be beneficial to have a universal setting in the Settings app > Phone section that doesn’t require being on a live call to toggle on or off. For now, though, you'll need to access it via the Control Center while on a call.
If you don't see this option on your iPhone, ensure you're running iOS 16.4 or later, as earlier versions do not support this functionality for cellular calls.
The Voice Isolation feature designed to eliminate background noise has long been available for FaceTime calls on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, but now it's accessible for cellular calls made from an iPhone too.
