How to Protect Private Photos with Passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID on iPhone & iPad
Jun 11, 2025 am 09:36 AMThe “Hidden” photos album on iPhone and iPad provides a space to store images you don't want displayed in your regular Photos feed. However, the Hidden album remains accessible to anyone who knows where to look. Even if you hide the album itself, for better privacy regarding sensitive or personal pictures, you can set up authentication to access the Hidden photos album.
In essence, this involves securing entry to your private photos stored in the Hidden album using whichever method you use to secure your device—such as Face ID, passcode, or Touch ID. This feature is supported on both iPhone and iPad.
How to Enable Authentication to Access Hidden Photos Album on iPhone & iPad
This setting is usually enabled by default, but if it’s not active on your device, here's how to turn it on:
Launch the “Settings” app and navigate to “Photos”
Scroll down until you see the option labeled “Use Face ID”, “Use Passcode”, or “Use Touch ID”—depending on your device model and current settings configuration
Now, whenever you try to view the “Hidden” photos album, you will be required to authenticate using Face ID, passcode, or Touch ID
You might assume that having general device security like Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode is enough to protect your photo albums. However, it's quite common for users to unlock their devices and then hand them over—for example, to scan a QR code or share photos via AirDrop. This added level of protection ensures your personal photos stay hidden and secure from unauthorized access.
If you'd prefer to allow unrestricted access to the Hidden album, simply return to the same setting and disable the feature.
Note that enabling this feature also applies the same authentication requirement when accessing the “Recently Deleted” album, which may also contain sensitive or private content.
