How to Remove the Background from Images on Mac with a Quick Action
Jun 11, 2025 am 10:10 AMThe newest versions of Finder in macOS come with a helpful Quick Action that enables you to remove the background from any image or photo, isolating the main subject(s) and converting it into a transparent PNG file. This feature is great for designers and developers, but also handy for everyday users who want to eliminate the background from a photo.
For optimal results when removing a background, it’s best to use an image with a clear foreground subject—like a person, animal, or object. To achieve the best outcome, avoid images with complicated backgrounds. For instance, a photo of someone with messy hair against grass of a similar color may not yield good results.
How to Remove Background from Images on Mac Using Finder
Open Finder and find the image or photo you'd like to edit
Right-click (or Control-click) on the image, then select “Quick Actions”
Click on “Remove Background”
Allow a moment for the image to process, and shortly afterward, a transparent PNG version will appear in the same folder, named “(original file name) Background Removed.png”
If the image has a complex background, a progress bar will show up in Finder while processing.
You can view and compare both versions using Preview, Quick Look, or Photos. In the example below, “Remove Background” was applied to a screenshot showing a MacBook Pro beside an external monitor. The original image is on the left, and the edited version is on the right. As you can see, the result isn’t perfect due to the similar colors of the background and screen borders.
If you're looking for more accuracy and control, consider using the Preview method to create a transparent PNG or GIF, which has been available on Mac for much longer than the newer ‘Remove Background’ Quick Action.
Finder's Quick Actions in macOS provide many convenient tools for managing files and images, such as converting WebP to JPG, merging files into PDFs, rotating videos, and more. Additionally, you can even create your own custom Quick Actions.
