Dia is the successor to the short-lived browser Arc, and The Browser has suspended Arc development and focused on Dia. The browser was released in beta on Wednesday and is open to all Arc members, while other users are required to be on the waiting list.
Although Arc has used artificial intelligence heavily—such as integrating features such as web snippets and link previews—Dia is known as the “AI browser” that focuses almost entirely on generative AI.
Dia browser features
Dia's most compelling features resemble the controversial Recall feature in Windows 11. The browser will remember your previous activities, allowing you to ask the AI ??to summarize what you did in a week and even learn your writing style.
"Whenever you open a tab, this AI model should feel more and more in line with your habits, and after a week, month or even a year of browsing, it will know you as much as your closest friends and colleagues," said Josh Miller, CEO of The Browser Company in a video introducing the browser.
It is not clear how The Browser Company will protect this information from security. Microsoft's Recall caused a security turmoil in early beta versions for intercepting screenshots of personal data that could be accessed by hackers or malware. Microsoft fixed this issue before Recall was officially launched.
The Browser Company has not disclosed specific security measures regarding the information stored by Dia, and only means that this feature is optional.
In addition, Dia's AI Assistant can read information you open in any browser tab. The company claims this solves a major pain point for current AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini: the need to frequently copy and paste content between the browser and the assistant. Now you can have the AI ??sum up page content in the browser directly, or write Gmail responses without switching focus.
The AI ??can even scan information in multiple tabs. For example, if you are purchasing a new car and have multiple tabs open to view different models, you can have the AI ??view these pages at the same time and compare their functional differences.
The browser also comes with what the company calls "skills." The skills included by default include "writing" (helping you write text in your own style) and "programming" (helping to process code).
You can also create skills for specific tasks. For example, if you don't want to see any sidebars on your Facebook page and just want to show the main information flow, you can let the AI ??hide these elements for you (similar to an already-existing feature of Arc browsers). Skills can also be used to automatically fill in web forms, such as pointing to online resumes, allowing AI to automatically complete job application forms.
AI browsing trends
Although Dia is totally betting on AI, other browser manufacturers are also actively embracing this technology. Microsoft has integrated the Copilot Assistant into the Edge browser, and Opera has also integrated ChatGPT and its own Aria AI into its products.
But some manufacturers are cautious about AI. For example, Vivaldi pays more attention to user privacy and chooses not to build AI in the browser; Firefox developer Mozilla publicly opposes Google's plan to introduce Gemini into Chrome browser, believing that this may damage the competitive landscape of the browser market.
The Browser Company just hopes Dia will have a greater impact than Arc. Arc has received praise from critics but has not been successful in shaking the mainstream browser market.
