How to Enable Memory Saver in Google Chrome to Reduce RAM/CPU Usage

Google Chrome is a powerful web browser, yet it's often criticized for its high resource consumption. This has been an ongoing concern, but recent updates to Chrome now offer a solution that not only reduces resource usage within Chrome but also makes the browser feel more responsive when handling heavy loads. You may notice reduced memory and CPU usage as well.

Make sure you update Chrome before trying this method—older versions don't support the feature we're discussing. We're demonstrating this on Chrome for Mac, but the trick works the same way on Windows PCs too.

How to Turn On Chrome's Memory Saver Mode

Ensure your Chrome version is 108.0.5359.124 or later. If you haven’t updated Chrome recently, you'll need to do so first to access this functionality.

  1. Launch Chrome if it isn't already open

  2. Enter the following address in the address bar to access Chrome Flags:
    chrome://flags/#high-efficiency-mode-available

  3. Flip the toggle to “Enabled”

  4. Restart Chrome

  5. Go to the Chrome address bar and type:
    chrome://settings/performance

  6. Find the option labeled “Memory Saver” and turn it ON

  7. Relaunch Chrome again to fully apply the changes

You should soon notice a difference in Chrome’s resource consumption, with both memory and CPU usage being lower.

Here's what a typical intensive browsing session looks like under normal settings, showing significant system resource use in Activity Monitor:

And here's the exact same group of tabs and windows opened in Chrome with Memory Saver activated:

As shown, memory usage drops by nearly half.

To be honest, I’m someone who keeps many browser windows open—usually between 10-20 windows, each containing anywhere from 3 to 15 tabs. This kind of usage pushes any browser to its limits in terms of memory, whether it's Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Edge, or Safari. With Memory Saver enabled, Chrome performs much better, making this feature definitely worth turning on if you're a regular Chrome user.

Chrome explains the Memory Saver function this way:

“When turned on, Chrome releases memory used by inactive tabs. This provides more system resources to active tabs and other applications, helping Chrome stay fast. Inactive tabs will automatically reload when you return to them.”

Are you using Chrome’s Memory Saver mode? What are your thoughts on it? Has it noticeably improved Chrome’s performance on your device? Share your experience in the comments below.
