How to Fix SSH Not Working on MacOS Ventura / Sonoma

Some Mac users have noticed that SSH is not functioning on their system after upgrading to macOS Ventura 13 or later versions, including Sonoma. Usually, they encounter an error when trying to connect via SSH to another server stating “no matching host key type found. Their offer: ssh-rsa“.

The cause of this issue seems to be that the OpenSSH version included with MacOS Ventura disables RSA signatures by default. You can fix this by either using a more secure hash method or by enabling RSA signatures again. Here, we'll guide you through the latter approach.

We will use nano as it's simple and user-friendly, but feel free to choose vi/vim or any other text editor you prefer.

We will edit the ssh_config file to re-enable RSA host keys. Here's how to proceed.

Launch the Terminal (you can use Spotlight or access it from the Utilities folder) and run the following command:

sudo nano /etc/ssh/ssh_config

You’ll need to enter your admin password for authentication.

Navigate to the end of the ssh_config file and append these lines at the bottom:

HostkeyAlgorithms ssh-rsaPubkeyAcceptedAlgorithms ssh-rsa

Press Control O to save your changes, then Control X to exit the editor.

Attempt to use SSH to connect to a server that uses RSA keys once more; it should now work properly.

While working in the terminal, you may also want to enable SSH if you intend to accept incoming connections to your Mac. For instance, you might want to remotely access your Mac from an iPad or another device via the command line, which this will allow.

Even after verifying that SSH is enabled in MacOS, this shouldn't affect outbound SSH connections. However, some users report that doing so has resolved their issues. Therefore, give it a try. Obviously, this would matter if the machine you're connecting to is a Mac running SSH, since some Mac users have observed that SSH is disabled by default in MacOS Ventura & macOS Sonoma, even if it was previously activated before updating the system software.
