Whether you love Motion Sense or consider it a gimmick, there's one thing we can all agree on — its current capabilities are pretty limited. At the moment, it only supports actions like skipping tracks in a playlist, snoozing alarms, silencing calls, lowering notification volume, and checking alerts. However, with a new mod, you can significantly expand what Motion Sense can do.

Thanks to a recent update to flar2's Button Mapper app, Google's Soli radar gestures can now become much more functional. By using this app, you can customize Motion Sense to open apps or shortcuts, toggle sensors, and more — all without needing root access!

Download Button Mapper

To get started, install Button Mapper. The developer behind the app, flar2 (also known as Aaron Segaert — the same person responsible for ElementalX), has been actively adding features. This includes remapping Active Edge on the Pixel 2, and now reconfiguring Motion Sense on the Pixel 4. You can download the app directly from the Play Store via the link below.

Upgrade to the Pro Version

To unlock Motion Sense customization on the Pixel 4, you'll need the pro version of Button Mapper. Launch the app and navigate to the "Motion Sense" section. You’ll be prompted to upgrade to the pro version — tap "Unlock" and choose any of the available payment options. Any amount from $4.29 up to $25 will unlock all features of the app.

After selecting your preferred payment amount, follow the instructions to complete the transaction. Once done, you’ll be upgraded to "Button Mapper Pro."

Enable Developer Options

With the pro version installed, you can now access the Motion Sense configuration menu. However, when you try to enable the toggle next to "Customize," you'll be redirected to a setup screen. That’s because Button Mapper requires elevated permissions through ADB to modify Motion Sense.

First, enable Developer Options on your Pixel 4. Then go into the Developer Options menu (Settings –> System –> Advanced) and turn on "USB Debugging." Now connect your phone to your computer.

Download the Platform-Tools Package

Next, download the Platform-Tools package for your operating system (Windows | Mac | Linux) from Google. Extract the ZIP file by double-clicking it, then drag the extracted folder to your desktop.

Open a Command Prompt

On your computer, open a command prompt window. If you're on Windows, press the Windows key, type "cmd," and hit Enter. For Linux or Mac users, launch Terminal from your Applications folder.

Now, type cd followed by a space, but don’t press Enter yet. Instead, drag the platform-tools folder you extracted earlier from your desktop into the command prompt window. This automatically inserts the full path to the folder. Now press Enter.

Check ADB Connection

Type "adb devices" (without quotes) and press Enter. If you're on Linux or Mac, use "./adb devices" instead. If you see a device ID followed by the word "device," you’re good to proceed. If not, check out our full ADB guide for troubleshooting help.

Grant Logcat Access

Now, run the command that grants Button Mapper permission to interact with Motion Sense. With your phone connected and the command prompt still open, enter the following if you're on Windows:

For Mac, Linux, or some PowerShell users, use this command instead:

Once executed, return to Button Mapper and tap "Done" if prompted, then toggle the switch again under "Customize." It should now activate.

Remap Motion Sense

With Button Mapper now able to modify Motion Sense, and the "Customize" toggle enabled, select "Swipe" and choose the action you want it to trigger. Use the dropdown at the top to browse through many available options. The screenshots below show just a few examples — simply pick what you'd like.

If you'd like a sound confirmation when performing the swipe gesture, enable the "Play Sound on action" toggle. To keep using the gesture for music control, enable "Disable while music is playing."

Finally, go to "Check Motion Sense settings" and ensure both "Motion Sense is on" and "Reach to check phone" are activated. Without these, I could only execute custom actions when the screen was off.

Depending on the action selected, such as toggling a sensor or launching an app, you'll either see it happen immediately or after unlocking your phone. For instance, choosing to open an app will launch it once you unlock your Pixel 4. While flar2 mentions it should work on the lock screen or home screen, I wasn’t able to make it work in those scenarios — though results may vary.
