Quick Tip: Build a Video Player Component in React

Build a reusable React video playback component

This article will guide you step by step to create a React video component that can loop through the list of videos from Vimeo, YouTube, and Dailymotion. This component is easy to expand to support other video providers.

We will use react-hot-boilerplate as a development environment, which supports hot reloading, allowing you to view component build results immediately in your browser without refreshing the page after each code change.

This video component has no state of its own, making it reusable and predictable, meaning that the same input will always produce the same output. This article will also discuss best practices for building components in React, including defining required props using propTypes, deconstructing props, and using extension operators to make components more customizable and dynamic. Source code and demos can be found in our GitHub repository (link omitted).

Development environment preparation

First, assuming you have git installed, clon the repository:

git clone https://github.com/gaearon/react-hot-boilerplate

Navigate to the project directory and install the dependencies:

cd react-hot-boilerplate
npm install
npm install --save query-string
npm start

If everything goes well, the console will display Listening at localhost:3000. Webpack takes some time to process files. When finished, the browser will display "Hello, world."

Create component

  1. Create component file: Create src in the social-video.js directory, add the initial code:
import React, { Component } from 'react';

export default class SocialVideo extends Component {
  render() {
    return (<h1>Social Video</h1>);
  }
}
  1. Create a video list in App.js: Define an array of videos and render App components in SocialVideo components:
import React, { Component } from 'react';
import SocialVideo from './social-video';

const videos = [
  // ... (視頻數(shù)據(jù))
];

export default class App extends Component {
  // ... (狀態(tài)管理和視頻切換邏輯)
  render() {
    const { service, video } = videos[this.state.videoIndex];
    return (
      <div>
        <SocialVideo height="270" service={service} video={video} width="500" />
        {/* ... (按鈕等) */}
      </div>
    );
  }
}
  1. Complete SocialVideoComponent: Use the query-string Library to parse the video URL and render the video with iframe:
import qs from 'query-string';
import React, { Component, PropTypes } from 'react';

export default class SocialVideo extends Component {
  // ... (propTypes定義)

  getIdFromVideoString(vString) {
    // ... (從視頻URL中提取ID)
  }

  render() {
    const { service, video, ...htmlTags } = this.props;
    const src = `${SocialVideo.urlMap.get(service)}${this.getIdFromVideoString(video)}`;

    return (
      <iframe src={src} frameBorder="0" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen {...htmlTags} />
    );
  }
}

Now, you should be able to see the running video component in http://localhost:3000/.

Summary

This article demonstrates how to create a reusable, predictable, and easily scalable React video component. We use react-hot-boilerplate and best practices to build this component.
