Apple Maps' Offline Maps: Finally a Google Maps Competitor
For those of us who've long preferred Apple Maps' interface but relied on Google Maps for its offline capabilities, the wait is over. iOS 17 introduces a game-changing feature: offline maps. This means turn-by-turn navigation and search are now possible even without a cellular or Wi-Fi connection – perfect for hikers and anyone venturing off the grid.
Note: iOS 17 is currently in public beta. While you can access this feature now, remember that beta software may contain bugs. Consider waiting for the official October 2023 release if stability is your priority. However, if you're already using iOS 17, let's explore how to utilize this fantastic new feature.
Downloading Offline Maps in Apple Maps
- Open Apple Maps and tap the icon displaying your profile picture or initials (located to the right of the search bar). Select "Offline Maps" from the menu.
- Tap "Download New Map". You'll be prompted to enter the city, region, or area you wish to download. Apple Maps will display a preview and a resizable cropping box. Pinch to zoom and adjust the area to be downloaded.
Remember that larger areas require more storage space; the app displays the required space at the bottom of the screen. Free up space on your iPhone if necessary before downloading large areas. Once you're ready, tap "Download".
- By default, downloads occur only over Wi-Fi. However, you can change this setting within the "Offline Maps" options. Apple Maps automatically updates your offline maps periodically to ensure you have the latest data. You can disable automatic updates if desired. To prevent storage issues from accumulating unused maps, enable the "Optimize Storage" option to automatically delete older, unused maps.
With offline maps, Apple Maps finally provides a compelling alternative to Google Maps. The addition of this feature, combined with the ability to transfer saved locations, makes it a strong contender. I, for one, may never need Google Maps on my iPhone again.
