Daily New York Times Strands puzzle game tips, word puzzles and answers (Wednesday, April 23) Author: Paul Tassi
Strands game subverts yesterday's puzzles and adopts completely opposite approaches to problem solving, a technique we don't often encounter.
Strands gameplay
The New York Times' Strands puzzle game is a variant of the classic text search game. The game is currently in beta, which means it will continue to exist only if enough people are involved every day.
There will be a new Strands game every day. The game will provide a letter grid of six rows and eight columns. The goal is to find a set of words that have common ground, and the game will give clues about the topic. Once the subject word is found, it will be highlighted in blue.
You also need to find a special word called "spangram". It tells you what these words have in common. Text puzzles connect both sides of the board. Although the subject word will not be a proper noun, the word puzzle can be a proper noun. Once the text puzzle is found, it will be highlighted in yellow.
Note: You need to stay alert.
"Some topics are fill-in-the-blank phrases. They can also be steps in the process, items belonging to the same category, synonyms or homophones," the New York Times noted. “Just like she changed the difficulty of Word Game (Wordle) puzzles in a week, [Word Game and Strands Editor Tracy] Bennett plans to give Strands puzzles from time to time.”
What are the Strands tips today?
Here are the tips from The New York Times, and I will provide a separate tip after that, hoping to help you.
Rough material
My tip is:
Scratch sound
These should be enough to get you started.
What is the answer to Strands today?
The text puzzles will be listed first, followed by a longer list of actual answers. The text puzzle is:
ROUGHSTUFF
Here is where it is on the board:
The answer is:
- SACKCLOTH
- PUMICE
- BARK
- ROPE
- LOOFAH
- SANDPAPER
As I said before, this is the opposite of yesterday's "fuzzy" puzzles and the opposite type of material. Strangely, the text puzzles here feel like a hint, and the hint feel like a text puzzle. Some of them focus on personal care, such as pumice and loofah, and the rest are just a general sense of roughness, but you may be able to choose dozens of other options for this one.
