Hello there, Connectors! The weekend is nearly here. I hope it’s an excellent one for you.
If you’re searching for some weekend reading, I’d recommend taking a look at Tending Gardens. In this newsletter, "beginner writer and farmer" Kana Chan gives a glimpse into life in the rural village of Kamikatsu, Japan’s first zero-waste municipality.
It’s always delightful to find one of these notes in my inbox, offering a view of a lifestyle so different from mine. In the latest edition of Tending Gardens, Chan – who relocated to Japan after growing up in Canada – wrote about Japanese vocabulary and learning terms in the local dialect linked to slow living:
One of the first words I picked up was shiwa shiwa which means slowly or without rushing. Shiwashiwa ikinayo means go slowly, but we also say ‘look at it slowly’, ‘drink it slowly’, or ‘think about it slowly’. The word means slowly, but it’s so charming the way it rolls off the tongue, shiwa shiwa, I picture the grandmas who tell me to slow down. My energy and need to rush being gently reminded to ease off… it’s the countryside afterall and what’s the rush?
Before we start, we have a fantastic little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all sorts of other topics. Everyone who has joined has been wonderful. It’s a fun place to hang out, and you’re more than welcome to join us.
Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I make a mistake. I don’t look at the comments or Twitter much. You can also read my weekend editions of this column at my new newsletter, Pastimes.*
Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Friday, June 6 are coming right up.
How To Play Connections
Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT’s website or Games app.
You’re shown a grid of 16 words. Your job is to organize them into four groups of four by determining the connections between them. These groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants, or words preceded by a body part.
There’s only one solution for each puzzle, and you’ll need to be cautious when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see connections between them.
Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the simplest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is typically the trickiest one. The purple group often involves wordplay.
Select four words you think belong together and press Submit. If you make a guess and it’s wrong, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you’ll still need to figure out which one to swap.
If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you’re really stuck, today’s Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.
If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication’s Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you’ve missed.

This is your final warning!
Today’s Connections answers are...
- Yellow group — newspaper jobs (COLUMNIST, EDITOR, PHOTOGRAPHER, REPORTER)
- Green group — everyday (COMMON, REGULAR, ROUTINE, STANDARD)
- Blue group — what "con" might mean (CONVENTION, CRIMINAL, DRAWBACK, SWINDLE)
- Purple group — ending with kinds of dogs (NEWSHOUND, SHADOWBOXER, SNICKERDOODLE, TRENDSETTER)
We had at least two groups with five possibilities here:
- CONVENTION, STANDARD, ROUTINE, REGULAR and COMMON
- REPORTER, NEWSHOUND, PHOTOGRAPHER, EDITOR and COLUMNIT
Let me tell you my heart swelled when I saw there was a bunch of journalism-related words. NEWSHOUND didn't quite fit, though, as it's not a description of a job. That stood out to me and as I examined the construction of the word (and the very out-of-place SNICKERDOODLE), the purples quickly became clear.
I wasn’t quite sure about the two groups other than the journalism jobs, so I cleared the yellows to get a better look at those. For what it’s worth, when anyone asks me what I do for a living, I tend to say I’m a writer or blogger. I sometimes do some actual reporting (and I’m officially a "contributing reporter" elsewhere), but I mainly put words together on blogs. That's what I do.
ROUTINE seemed the most likely to go with SWINDLE, CRIMINAL and DRAWBACK, so I made a guess with those four and was one away. Booo. On closer inspection, CONVENTION starts with "con," which can also mean a scam, so that made more sense. Indeed, that got me the blues. A slightly different connection than I had in mind, but I'll take it.
That left the greens for victory. I had no problem figuring out the connection there.
For the record, here's how I fared with this one:

P.S. I've no idea why this song popped into my head the other day, but it did, so I thought I'd share it with you all. I saw colonopenbracket open for a fun band called Drive-By Argument a very long time ago. I enjoyed their set quite a bit and "Cute" is my favorite thing I've heard from them.
It's in the chiptune genre (think music made with the soundcard of old Nintendo consoles) and the musicality here is quite interesting. It sounds a little like Owl City. Appropriately enough, I find this song rather cute:
