Apple's WWDC 2025 event has arrived, and it brings major updates. To start, Apple is shifting away from numerical software versions to a simpler naming approach based on the year. In line with this change, the company has just revealed iPadOS 26, featuring a full visual refresh, robust new tools, and much more.
Your phone, watch, iPad, Mac, and even CarPlay will all receive a visual upgrade through Apple's "Liquid Glass" design. This new aesthetic is translucent and sleek, dynamically adapting to on-screen content, controls, and other elements in real time. It can even reflect and refract visuals, making your iPad appear more vivid.
Although we'll learn more about Liquid Glass in the coming weeks, here's a look at what’s new in iPadOS 26.
iPadOS 26: What's New
For iPadOS 26, Apple highlights improvements in design, the windowing system, Apple Intelligence enhancements, better file handling, the arrival of Preview and Journal apps, and support for demanding background tasks on Apple silicon devices. Additionally, there's now a dedicated Apple Games app. “iPadOS 26 makes our most versatile device even more capable,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering.
- Stunning new Liquid Glass interface
- Enhanced and intuitive windowing system
- Preview and Journal apps now available on iPad
- Additional Apple Intelligence functions
- Upgraded audio controls
- Calculator gains 3D graphing
- Support for importing and exporting notes as markdown files
- New accessibility options and more.
Beyond the Liquid Glass redesign, your iPad will gain several powerful tools that help you accomplish more, work faster, and utilize resizable windows and Apple Intelligence.
The updated windowing system represents one of the biggest changes and one that iPad users have long requested. Now, you can run multiple apps and windows simultaneously, resize them effortlessly, and place them exactly where you want. Opening multiple windows freely will significantly boost productivity.
Like on a Mac, you can open, resize, and minimize windows instantly. Even better, if you resized an app before, it will reopen in the same size and location next time. This smart windowing system also integrates seamlessly with Exposé and Stage Manager.
You can go split screen, open five windows at once, or swipe down from the top of the screen to access a new menu bar that simplifies accessing commands for each app.
Apple Intelligence adds live translation to FaceTime, innovative ways to create Genmoji using ChatGPT, and helpful Shortcut features such as text summarization via Writing Tools and image creation in Image Playground.
A Better Files App
iPadOS 26 also ushers in a redesigned Files app with improved functionality. The new Files app offers various customization options, allowing you to personalize colors and icons, add emojis, and more to specific files, helping you locate important items faster. An updated list view lets you see more documents and files organized into resizable columns.
There’s also a new drag-and-drop feature that enables placing any folder from the Files app directly into the dock. Plus, you can now set a default app to open specific file types.
And So Much More
While those are some of the main highlights, iPadOS 26 includes many more innovations. Users will appreciate having the Preview and Journal apps on their iPads, along with new audio features that enhance input/output flexibility and recording. You can even assign different microphones for individual apps or websites, elevating the audio experience.
iPadOS 26 will be compatible with the iPad 8th Gen (featuring the home button) and all newer models, though the base model 7th Gen iPad will no longer be supported. These features are available for testing today through the Apple Developer Program or the public beta next month. Otherwise, it will roll out as a free update this fall. At this point, it might as well be called macOS.
