Hey there! Here are the NYT Strands hints, spangram and answers for Monday, June 16.

How To Play Strands

The New York Times puzzle Strands is a twist on traditional word searches. You can play it on the NYT website or via the NYT Games app along with games like Wordle and Connections. We also provide daily guides for those at Forbes Gaming.

Each day brings a new Strands challenge. The game board consists of a six by eight grid of letters. Your goal is to locate words that share a common theme, which you’ll be given a clue for. When you find one of the theme words, it will stay highlighted in blue.

You must also uncover the spangram, a special word that ties all the theme words together. The spangram spans from one side of the board to another, though it might not begin or end at the edges. While theme words won’t be proper names, the spangram could be. When you find it, it will appear highlighted in yellow.

Every letter on the board is used once across the theme words and the spangram. You’re allowed to connect letters vertically, horizontally or diagonally, and you can change directions mid-word if needed. On touchscreen devices, double tap the final letter to submit your guess.

If you find three non-theme words that are each at least four letters long, you’ll unlock the Hint button. Clicking this will highlight some letters belonging to a theme word.

Keep in mind: the puzzles may sometimes require filling in missing parts of phrases or using synonyms or homophones. The difficulty varies daily, so expect some surprises.

At first, I thought about musical scales and instruments. Eventually, after getting some hints—namely ETUDE and SUITE—I had enough to figure out the spangram. From there, my knowledge of music terms helped me find the rest.

I used two hints, and the spangram was the third theme word I discovered.
