While that title may seem a bit silly, and the movie might be a little silly too, Plane turns out to be a surprisingly solid action-thriller. It boasts a strong 79% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes with nearly two hundred reviews counted, and even better, an impressive 94% audience score—something quite rare in this genre. Here’s what the film is all about:
“In the gripping action film PLANE, pilot Brodie Torrance (Gerard Butler) saves his passengers from a lightning strike by executing a daring landing on a conflict-ridden island—only to discover that surviving the crash was only the start. When most of the passengers are captured by armed insurgents, the only ally Torrance can rely on is Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter), a man accused of murder who was being escorted by the FBI. To save the passengers, Torrance must team up with Gaspare, and along the way, learns there's more to him than initially appears.”
Gerard Butler possesses a similar appeal as Jason Statham—constantly appearing in variations of the same kind of action film, yet consistently delivering something enjoyable, occasionally even great, even if it leans into some clichés now and then. Butler has starred in both Den of Thieves sequels, the Has Fallen franchise, his iconic role in 300, and most recently, reprised his How to Train Your Dragon character for the well-received live-action adaptation.
On the other side of the story is Mike Colter, who you may know either from the brilliant supernatural series Evil or his time in the MCU portraying Luke Cage—a role he may soon revisit in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again. I’ve never seen him deliver a weak performance, and Plane seems to be no exception.
Despite reaching the top spot on Netflix, Plane is not a Netflix original. It only grossed $74 million globally during its theatrical run, so it wasn’t exactly a box office hit, but it’s clearly drawing a lot of attention now. It pushed Tyler Perry’s Straw aside and currently ranks higher than the popular documentary Titan, which explores the Oceangate Submersible incident.
Netflix has had mixed results when it comes to action films. Its strongest entries include the Extraction franchise, while big-budget efforts like Red Notice and The Gray Man haven’t fared well with critics. But hey, that’s where licensing pays off. Give Plane* a shot, even if it seems a bit absurd at first glance.
