How To Play Strands

The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a twist on the traditional word search. It's currently in beta, so its continued presence depends on daily player engagement.

Each day presents a new Strands game. You'll be given a six by eight letter grid. Your goal is to locate words that share a commonality, with a hint provided for the theme. When you uncover a theme word, it will stay highlighted in blue.

Additionally, you must locate a unique word known as a spangram. This word reveals the connection among the others and spans from one side of the board to the opposite side. While theme words won't be proper names, the spangram might be. Upon discovering the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.

Be prepared to think quickly.

"Some themes are fill-in-the-blank phrases. They could also represent steps in a process, items within the same category, synonyms, or homophones," The New York Times explains. "Just like varying the difficulty of Wordle puzzles throughout the week, [Wordle and Strands editor Tracy] Bennett intends to challenge Strands players with occasional surprises."

I flew through this one, finishing in under a minute with a perfect score. My first thought upon seeing “goose eggs” was zero, which I immediately found on the board—indicating I was on the right path. The only term that caught me off guard was “zippo,” since I was only familiar with “zip” and didn’t realize it had a longer variant. But there it was.
