Granite Demos Show Green Excavation Power For AI Data Centers
Jul 02, 2025 am 11:08 AMObservers are now seeing the Earthgrid company’s Plasma Excavation System (PES) in action, where this massive machine, fitted with two 2500-kilowatt plasma torches, cleanly cuts through granite.
It's an impressive demonstration and highlights some of the most ambitious efforts currently underway in renewable tunneling and excavation technologies.
The Environmental Impact
How does this type of advancement contribute to environmental preservation and reduce climate effects?
Primarily, it simplifies the process of installing powerlines and utilities beneath the ground, thereby reducing wildfire risks in regions prone to devastating fires that cause property destruction and release harmful emissions.
The electric tunneling method substitutes traditional diesel-powered machinery and explosives, both of which carry significant environmental consequences.
Additionally, it opens up possibilities for a less invasive approach to earth moving.
Combined, these benefits make Earthgrid’s method particularly appealing to those focused on improving infrastructure practices.
CEO Troy Helming was at Davos discussing the importance of such renewable initiatives.
He has also openly expressed enthusiasm about the recent progress the company has achieved.
"(Our latest) advancements clearly demonstrate a major milestone in validating our TBR model and its ability to quickly and safely connect underground electrical and fiber optic networks. No other company has ever attempted to bore through rock using more than one plasma torch – let alone materials like greywacke or granite," Helming stated publicly regarding the innovation process. "We’re eager to implement our dual-torch system across several upcoming client projects."
What’s Next
On June 27, the company hosted a Sierra Granite demonstration event in Raymond, California.
The location was selected due to its unique geological features and abundance of White Sierra Granite.
Helming described the process vividly:
"It looks like a robot with two lightsabers on the front, vaporizing through rock and soil, and equipped with a Mandalorian-style jet pack on the back, blowing away tiny pieces of rock — bits the size of cornflakes," he explained. “And it moves so fast and at such a lower cost than anything else available right now. We're talking about building the future power grid, transmission lines, water pipelines, fiber connections… there are countless communities still without access to high-speed internet…”
This green excavation method will play a key role in meeting future energy demands in a high-tech world, but there’s another angle too:
Currently, innovators and major investors are searching for solutions to supply energy to large-scale AI data centers. The environmental implications of how this is achieved remain a critical concern.
“As AI continues its rapid expansion, we're actively developing more efficient cooling systems for servers, reducing water consumption, and advancing sustainable computing,” says Johnson Eung from Supermicro, a leading firm specializing in server design.
Collectively, these players will be shaping the development of what may be the most powerful IT systems ever built. That’s no small matter.
