Ever had a tune stuck in your head that you can’t quite put words to? Not sure of the lyrics enough to search for it online? Google has an answer. The Google Search app can recognize a song based on your hum or whistle, making music discovery simpler. This feature works directly on your iPhone or iPad.
While Shazam is arguably the top music identification app, not everyone is actively listening to a song they want to identify. In such cases, using Siri on your iPhone or iPad to detect background music won’t help. Often, people catch a snippet of a song and it lingers in their mind, even if they don’t know the lyrics. That’s why Google’s Hum to Search function really shines—it’s a unique solution to a common problem.
Let’s explore how this clever tool works and learn how to use humming to find songs via the Google app on your iPhone or iPad.
How to Use Hum to Search for Songs with Google
To begin, there are two requirements. First, you must have the Google app installed on your device, as that’s what we’ll be using. Second, you also need the Google Assistant app installed. Once both apps are set up, follow these steps:
- Open the Google Search app on your iPhone or iPad and tap the microphone icon on the right side of the search bar.
- Below the dots, you’ll see an option labeled “Search a song.” Tap on it to continue.
- You’ll now enter the app’s dedicated song search screen. All you need to do is hum a part or verse of the song you're trying to locate.
- When the app identifies a match, it will show three possible results, typically listing the most accurate one first.
As shown, Google makes it simple to find songs just by humming. How long did that take?
Tapping any result initiates a Google search for the song, which may include full lyrics—helping you confirm whether it's the correct one.
Keep in mind that sometimes Google might struggle to identify your humming and return no results. During our testing with ten songs, three weren’t recognized. However, for well-known tracks, the success rate is high.
Can’t find the “Search a Song” option in the Google app? It likely means the Google Assistant app isn’t installed yet on your iPhone or iPad. We’re not exactly sure why it’s required since you don’t even need to open the app. Alternatively, after tapping the microphone button, try saying “What’s the name of this song.”
Maybe Siri will offer this capability someday too, but currently, it can identify songs playing around you if you're curious about them.
We hope you’ve been able to uncover new songs without knowing the exact lyrics through the Google Search app. Do you think Siri and Shazam should adopt this functionality as well? Share your thoughts and feedback in the comments below.
