MindsEye's head honcho has pointed fingers at "internal and external saboteurs" for the game and studio’s ongoing troubles. Read more to find out what the CEO had to say and what lies ahead for the game.
MindsEye Woes Continue After Disastrous Launch
Plans to Relaunch
Leslie Benzies, CEO of MindsEye developer Build A Rocket Boy (BARB) and former President of Rockstar North, is determined to stage a comeback and relaunch MindsEye. As IGN reported on July 4, Benzies discussed their current challenges with his team during a video call on July 2.
According to Benzies, the studio aims to recover and re-release MindsEye after its rocky debut. The developers have vowed to "work around the clock" to resolve performance issues and bugs players have encountered since launch.
Earlier in the week, BARB released Update #3 as part of their efforts to fix the game. In a Twitter (X) post on June 30, the studio revealed that the update went live on consoles, with a PC release scheduled for a later date. The post stated, "We’ve watched hundreds of hours of gameplay footage and reviewed player feedback across multiple channels to prioritize the most pressing issues and improve the experience for all our console players."
In addition to these hotfixes, BARB also intends to deliver on the game’s ambitious roadmap, which includes new missions, special collaborations, multiplayer mode, and much more, set to roll out over the coming months. However, this may be uncertain given the current state of the game following its troubled launch.
Despite several updates rolled out by BARB since release, the community remains disengaged from the glitch-ridden shooter. According to SteamDB charts, MindsEye currently has only 19 players online. It has garnered "Mostly Negative" reviews on Steam and holds a Metacritic score of 38.
Here at Game8, we awarded MindsEye an overall score of 46 out of 100 due to it being riddled with bugs, poorly optimized, and generally underwhelming. Despite high hopes as an ambitious title from publisher IO Interactive, it was hindered by performance problems and clearly needed more time to refine its core elements and mechanics. MindsEye Review | Bad for the Eyes, Even Worse for the Mind ### Around 300 Employees Received At-Risk Emails
Although discussions about a potential relaunch are underway, insider sources confirmed via IGN on July 4 that approximately 300 members of BARB’s UK workforce have received emails indicating they are at risk of redundancy as the studio continues its layoff process following MindsEye’s failure. This includes employees from PlayFusion, which merged into BARB in 2024.
As previously reported by IGN on June 24, BARB began a redundancy process affecting over 100 staff members. BARB stated, "We can confirm that we have had to make the painful decision to notify our hardworking team of some internal changes at Build A Rocket Boy. While we are working to reassign roles for as many of those impacted by these changes as possible, sadly we are initiating a formal consultation process that may result in redundancies."
The studio emphasized that this step will enable them to "focus on delivering ongoing updates and performance optimization for MindsEye, while also ensuring the long-term success of Build A Rocket Boy’s future ambitions."
"Internal and External Saboteurs" Are To Be Blamed
Amidst widespread layoffs, Benzies asserted that the game’s disastrous launch and the studio’s current difficulties were caused by "internal and external saboteurs." Anonymous employees claim the CEO cited multiple fronts contributing to MindsEye and the studio’s struggles. BARB co-CEO Mark Gerhard shared similar sentiments during a May 27 Discord Q&A session, suggesting there was a coordinated effort to undermine the studio.
Despite both leaders’ comments, no official statement or evidence has been provided by the studio to support these allegations. On the contrary, Hakan Abrak, CEO of MindsEye publisher IO Interactive, told IGN on June 10 that he does not believe sabotage occurred.
Abrak said, "I don't know. I don't believe that. I don't believe that. I just think the game should speak for itself on June the 10th." Regardless, both BARB and IO Interactive remain committed to resolving the issues facing the sci-fi action-adventure through regular updates and hotfixes.
Given the intense criticism the game has faced since its release, BARB’s future remains uncertain despite ongoing attempts to rescue the sci-fi action-adventure. MindsEye is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. For the latest news on the game, check out our article below!
