Apple released its first AirPods in 2016, and since then, these small white wireless earbuds have had a major influence on the audio hardware market. Almost every smartphone manufacturer now offers their own version of the AirPods, including companies like Google and Samsung.
We’ve seen many models released over time, all maintaining the same ease of setup and user-friendly experience that makes AirPods so popular. However, if you explore further into their features and functions, you’ll find there are numerous handy tricks you can do with these earbuds.
1. Use just one AirPod
Using only one AirPod at a time can give you twice the battery life between charges. While stereo sound is lost, this works great for calls and podcasts. iPhones and iPads also offer a mono audio setting. To activate it, go to Settings > Accessibility & Visual, then toggle on Mono Audio.
2. Connect to more devices
Although they’re made by Apple, your AirPods aren’t limited to Apple devices—they work with any Bluetooth-enabled device, such as phones, TVs, and laptops. Just open the Bluetooth menu: On Google Pixel phones, go to Settings and select Connected devices > Pair new device.
To place your AirPods in pairing mode, put them in the case, open the lid, and double-tap the front (for AirPods 4) or press and hold the setup button on the back (for other models). If done correctly, the status light will flash white, and you can select the AirPods from your device’s Bluetooth list.
3. Learn the gestures
AirPods support various touch controls that let you manage playback without touching your phone. The exact gestures depend on your model, but with AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2, pressing the stem plays or pauses audio, double-pressing skips forward, and triple-pressing skips back.
These models also allow you to answer calls by nodding your head or reject them by shaking your head—this feature works automatically once Siri is set up to handle calls on your AirPods. You can adjust gesture settings directly through iOS, iPadOS, or macOS.
4. Monitor charging status
Want to know if your AirPods case is fully charged? When connected to power or placed on a wireless charger, the case shows an amber light when charging and green when fully charged. You can check this light anytime by tapping the front of the case. For more details, view the charging status from a connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
5. Make use of adaptive features
If you own AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 2, you can access Adaptive Audio features. These automatically adjust sound based on your surroundings to deliver optimal listening quality wherever you are.
With the earbuds in your ears, open the Control Center on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and tap the volume control. From there, you can adjust noise cancellation levels and toggle Conversation Awareness, which enhances voices when you start speaking to someone nearby.
6. Turn on spatial audio
A cool feature exclusive to AirPods 3, 4, and Pro models is spatial audio. This creates a surround sound effect that moves with your head, supported by Apple TV, Apple Music, Netflix, Disney Plus, Prime Video, and more.
To enable spatial audio, go to the Bluetooth settings on your iPhone or iPad, or System Settings on your Mac. Tap the blue info icon next to your AirPods, then choose Personalized Spatial Audio and Personalize Spatial Audio. Follow the prompts to complete setup using your device’s camera for a 3D facial scan.
7. Track down lost AirPods
Use the Find My app on your Apple devices to locate misplaced AirPods, along with phones, tablets, watches, and computers. To ensure your AirPods appear in the app, go to Bluetooth settings (iOS/iPadOS) or System Settings (macOS), tap the blue info icon next to your AirPods, and select Show in Find My.
