Respect the application selected by users
The Files app is available for download from the Microsoft Store ($8.99) or can be installed for free using the Classic Installer (the download link is at the bottom of the page). The free version includes all features and the developer recommends that users donate voluntarily.
The sidebar of the Files app can be customized to hide or remove any part of it according to user preferences, and the settings will be saved. Unlike Windows Explorer, the Files app does not reset user-defined hidden settings every time it is opened. In terms of cloud service integration, Files applications treat multiple cloud services such as OneDrive, Dropbox, iCloud, Google Drive, etc. equally, rather than overemphasizing OneDrive like the Explorer.
Setting options are also richer, such as customizing right-click menu, color scheme, folder background pictures, etc.
Multiple view modes
Files app supports column views similar to macOS Finder, which makes it convenient for users to browse folders using arrow keys and intuitively view the current location.
Files app also supports all view modes of the Explorer and can intelligently select appropriate view modes based on folder contents (for example, large thumbnails will be displayed when opening a picture folder). The preview pane feature has also been improved to provide richer file details.
Files application also provides a command panel (Ctrl Shift P), which allows users to quickly execute various commands without memory shortcut keys or using a mouse.
All in all, the Files app is an excellent alternative to Windows Explorer, solving many pain points and adding many new features, which is worth a try.
