Pokémon Legends: Z-A trailer
The reveal of Pokémon Legends: Z-A came during the Pokémon Presents presentation held on 27th February 2024, featuring this intriguing announcement video.
The title might be referencing the enigmatic character AZ from Pokémon X and Y. He’s lived for thousands of years and carries deep guilt over creating a devastating weapon. His goal was to bring his beloved Floette back to life, though whether that was a wise decision remains questionable — especially considering the weapon drew power from Pokémon life forces and left behind countless graves across Route 10 in Kalos. In hindsight, it seems like a poor choice.
Also worth noting is the logo design for this game’s title — the 'Z' and 'A' resemble Zygarde, a Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation 6. This hints that Zygarde could play a central role similar to how Arceus did in the previous Legends game.
Zygarde has three forms: a dog-like shape at 10%, a serpentine form at 50%, and a humanoid appearance at 100%. These forms may draw inspiration from Norse mythology — specifically the children of Loki and Angrboea: Fenrir, J?rmungandr, and Hel.
The 10% form bears resemblance to Fenrir the wolf, especially if you interpret its leash as Gleipnir — the binding rope that held Fenrir until Ragnar?k. Meanwhile, the 50% form echoes J?rmungandr, the world-serpent. Finally, the 100% form looks mechanical but may be inspired by Hel, ruler of the underworld known as Hel in Norse myth. (Yes, same name.)
10% Zygarde and 50% Zygarde. Curiously, all three of Loki's offspring had roles in Ragnar?k — J?rmungandr signaled its start by stirring the seas, Fenrir killed Odin, and the souls trapped in Hel joined the final battle. Whether such themes will appear in Pokémon Legends: Z-A remains uncertain. Although, now that I think of it... wasn’t there some ancient catastrophe in Kalos? Hmm...
That’s everything we have so far, but we’re eager to learn more about this exciting addition to the franchise. If you haven't caught up on recent Pokémon games yet, now might be the time to go back and try titles like Scarlet and Violet — which even contained hidden clues about Z-A. In the meantime, there are plenty of Pokémon Go events to enjoy, and a brand-new mobile card game coming soon that could easily consume every spare moment you have.
