You can obtain the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom, and even though Link loses the corrupted version of this iconic legendary sword at the beginning of the game, you can reclaim it in its full glory very early if you know where to look.

We've detailed the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Master Sword location below, but be warned that it's a moving target, so tracking it down can be quite difficult unless luck is on your side.

There are three methods that make finding it much easier, so along with explaining how to get the Master Sword in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, we've also covered the best way to obtain it. Additionally, we explain everything known about how this legendary weapon functions and why it's so valuable.

On this page:

  • How to acquire the Master Sword
  • How to locate the Light Dragon
  • An explanation of the Master Sword

For more details on Link's journey, check out our Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom walkthrough.

How to Get the Master Sword in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

The Master Sword is embedded in the head of the Light Dragon in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Dragons don't remain stationary, and the Light Dragon especially roams across a vast area compared to other dragons, making it hard to pinpoint its exact location unless you have another means of tracking it—more on that later.

We've personally seen the Light Dragon near the Great Sky Island, but reports suggest it has also been sighted near the centers of Akkala, Necluda, Gerudo, and Hebra regions around Hyrule.

When looking for the Light Dragon, keep an eye out for a yellow and blue glow coming from a dragon’s head—that’s the Master Sword. The coloration helps identify the correct dragon. If you're close enough, using the Camera ability obtained during the Camera Work in the Depths quest will help confirm it’s the Light Dragon by displaying its name above it.

The Wind Temple ability allows Link to glide faster, which is helpful if reaching the dragon proves challenging. If no Skyview Tower is nearby, watch for Falling Rocks that can be manipulated with Recall to ascend into the sky.

While you can attempt to find the Master Sword as soon as you learn its location, bear in mind that you need two full stamina bars to pull it free from the Light Dragon's head. Temporary stamina boosts won’t suffice, so completing some Shrines is necessary to build up stamina capacity.

Alternatively, visit the Emergency Shelter at Looking Landing and interact with the dark statue to exchange Link’s heart containers for additional stamina. Each traded heart earns 100 Rupees, and converting a heart into part of a stamina bar costs 120 Rupees—effectively costing only 20 Rupees per conversion.

How to Find the Light Dragon in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

There are several ways to locate the Light Dragon in Tears of the Kingdom, although some are more straightforward than others. No matter the method you choose, remember that you'll still need two full stamina bars when attempting to remove the Master Sword from the Light Dragon.

Option 1: Begin the Recovering the Hero's Sword quest

The most reliable way to locate the Light Dragon in Tears of the Kingdom is to start the Recovering the Hero's Sword quest, which will mark the Light Dragon's position on your map.

To initiate the Recovering the Hero's Sword quest, first find a way into the Lost Woods. We offer a complete guide on navigating the Lost Woods elsewhere, but generally speaking, you must explore the chasm beneath the Great Hyrule Forest, then use Ascend upon reaching the center of the area, leading you to the Deku Tree where the Master Sword was located in Breath of the Wild.

It's crucial to defeat Phantom Ganon immediately after defeating the Gloom Hands, as the hands will respawn if you leave during the Ganon fight.

After cleansing the Deku Tree, the Light Dragon's location will be marked permanently on your map, allowing easy access whenever needed.

Option 2: Complete The Dragon's Tears quest

A less combat-intensive alternative to acquiring access to the Light Dragon is to complete The Dragon's Tears quest instead. Finishing this lengthy quest will cause the Light Dragon to appear above you once you've collected the final Dragon Tear. However, it won’t stay long, so ensure you already have two stamina bars prepared before proceeding.

To begin the Dragon's Tears quest, you must first finish the Impa and the Geoglyphs quest. Given the time investment required for this route, we recommend focusing on the Recovering the Hero's Sword quest if you want the Master Sword early in the game.

Option 3: Watch from the Sky Islands

The final method of locating the Light Dragon is something achievable early in the game. Once you've reached the Sky Islands, you can observe it flying below, and with precise timing, you can leap onto its back. Bear in mind, however, that while this method works early, you'll still require two stamina bars to proceed.

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Master Sword Explained

Once you've successfully acquired the Master Sword, there are several important points to note.

How to get the Master Sword in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

  • The Master Sword is the only weapon in Tears of the Kingdom that never breaks. Regardless of usage frequency, durability will never deplete.
  • While the Master Sword doesn't break, it does drain energy over time, limiting its continuous use in every battle. Approximately ten minutes after running out of power, the Master Sword fully recharges, meaning you can use it frequently without worry despite its energy constraints.
  • With TOTK's Fuse ability, you can attach various materials to the Master Sword to increase its strength or alter its appearance dramatically. We particularly look forward to trying the unique soup ladle and Master Sword combination. How to get the Master Sword in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
  • After fusing a material to the Master Sword, the displayed damage value reflects the specific material used. Therefore, higher-quality Fuse materials result in a stronger Master Sword. One of the best options is a Diamond, but experimenting with different materials is encouraged to discover what suits you best.

Hope you enjoy wielding the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom!
