You won’t stay hidden underground for long, as Link quickly finds himself on the Great Sky Island—the starting zone of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Here, you'll obtain the Purah Pad and begin the game's first main quest, The Closed Door.

Beneath Hyrule Castle in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

Your adventure in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom begins deep under Hyrule Castle. For now, all you need to do is follow Zelda, speak with her from time to time, and examine what lies beneath the castle walls.

After walking through a short hallway lined with statues, you’ll be ambushed by some Keese. Defeat them and a cutscene will trigger. When it ends, proceed down the corridor filled with red smoke. (Because that never leads to trouble.)

Once you wake up, grab the Decayed Master Sword. Even though it's in poor shape, use it to slash through the vines covering the doorway. Once you enter the next room, interact with the glowing green circle marked with a hand symbol.

With that done, move through the newly opened doors and continue along the tunnel—plunging into water and scaling walls as needed—until you find a chest containing the Archaic Legwear. It might be a good idea to equip it so Link has some armor, but feel free to decide for yourself.

Once done, go through the exit leading to the outside world and dive down to the Great Sky Island!

Great Sky Island and how to get the Purah Pad in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

Welcome to the Great Sky Island—the opening area of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom! Your first destination is the Temple of Time, and as you travel there, we suggest collecting any Tree Branches and food you come across since they will prove helpful.

After landing in the pond covered with lily pads, swim to the shore and walk down the steps. Continue along the path and you’ll soon encounter a Zonai Soldier Construct which you can defeat. Once it’s gone, head to the nearby small stone structure and pick up the Wooden Stick—a better weapon than tree branches—inside.

Next, keep following the path until you meet a friendly Steward Construct who will give you the Purah Pad—Tears of the Kingdom’s version of the Sheikah Slate.

How to start and complete the Closed Door main quest in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

Now that you have the Purah Pad, it’s time to head toward the Temple of Time in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Before that, though, interact with another green circle located to the right of the Steward Construct to activate a bridge you can cross. After crossing, continue along the path to a platform overlooking a pond you can jump into.

You've now arrived at one of the larger sections of the Great Sky Island. While this guide focuses on the most straightforward route to the Temple of Time, feel free to explore if you prefer a different path.

We reached the Temple of Time by exiting the pond between the two stone stands and following the path starting at their base, defeating any Soldier Constructs encountered along the way, until we came upon the temple steps.

Image credit: NintendoUpon reaching the temple, swim through the water to reach the steps, then climb them. You’ll face off against a Soldier Construct wielding a shield, and once it's defeated, attempt to enter the Temple of Time.

After a cutscene plays, the main quest The Closed Door will automatically begin, and your goal becomes visiting the shrines scattered around the Great Sky Island.

To complete The Closed Door quest in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you must locate and complete all Shrines on the Great Sky Island. You can find detailed instructions for each Shrine below—we recommend completing them in this order:
