Extreme cold is one of the first environmental dangers you'll face in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom — not long after surviving falls and drowning. Hyrule can be a dangerous place, after all.

To the east of the Great Sky Island lies a mountainous region where you’ll find the Gutanbac Shrine. Reaching it requires you to understand how to make cold-resistant food.

Luckily, this Sky Island has an abundance of Spicy Peppers — just gather a few and toss them into a cooking pot. The game will automatically generate a dish for Link!

There are many ways to use peppers, as the saying goes. Start by putting five together in a pot for 12 minutes and 30 seconds of warmth. Alternatively, mix them with apples, raw meat, or whatever ingredients you have handy — the culinary world is yours to explore.

Cold resistant elixir recipes in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

Elixirs allow you to combine monster parts to help Link on his journey to rescue the princess from yet another castle. You probably won’t discover these until later in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom since you may not have the necessary bugs at first.

You can either track down butterflies in the wild if you're patient enough to sneak up on them, or more conveniently, purchase them from Beedle at Tabantha Bridge Stable.

Once you've obtained a Summerwing Butterfly (found in Eldin Canyon or Gerudo Highlands) or a Warm Darner (available in Akkala Highlands or Faron Grasslands), combine it with your preferred monster parts to craft a Spicy Elixir.

As previously mentioned, the journey to the Gutanbac Shrine on the Great Sky Island is your first real test of cold endurance. This shrine is where you learn the Ascend ability — and conveniently, there's an overhang from a dead, hollowed-out tree right in front of you as you exit the shrine. Wonder what that’s for?

If you guessed 'a chance to practice the Ascend ability outdoors', you're absolutely right! Climb up and collect the Archaic Warm Greaves, which provide two points of defense and one point (out of two) of cold resistance.

While the Archaic Warm Greaves will serve you well for much of Tears of the Kingdom, eventually you'll come across places so icy that Link needs extra protection.

Luckily, these items are located where it's coldest: Rito Village, which is currently enduring a sudden and continuous blizzard — likely due to climate change.

To acquire the best cold-resistant armor set, visit the Brazen Beak armor shop in Rito Village and purchase the Snowquil set for a total of 2150 Rupees — this includes the Snowquill Headdress, Snowquill Tunic, and Snowquill Trousers. However, you only really need two pieces of cold-resistant armor, so if money is tight, the Tunic is the most affordable option.

If you're feeling particularly generous with your Rupees, the Ruby Circlet found in Gerudo Shelter offers the same protection as the Snowquill Headdress but costs twice as much at 1300 Rupees.
