Hylian Shield location in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
The Hylian Shield in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can be found in a chest at Hyrule Castle Docks located at these exact coordinates (-0161, 1159, 0037).
The docks are positioned similarly to how they were in Breath of the Wild, though reaching them has changed slightly due to the new terrain. You can either sail there if you have the right tools or drop down from the castle’s shrine for a more straightforward approach.
How to get the Hylian Shield in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
There are two primary ways to reach the Hylian Shield in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, with the first requiring that you possess a Steering Stick.
If you have a Steering Stick Zonai Device—which you can acquire from the North Hyrule Archipelago’s capsule machine, among other locations—head to the western shore of the castle moat. There, you’ll find a pre-made boat where the road meets the water. Attach a control stick and fan, and use the wind to propel yourself forward, or create your own breeze using a Korok Frond, and navigate around to the point shown on the map below.
You’ll spot a small opening hidden within the rock wall. Follow this passage for a short distance until it opens up into a large harbor containing several docks and a landing area.
If you haven’t acquired a control stick yet, you can still access the docks—but it will require a bit more effort and completing the Serutabomac Shrine.
Prepare a few stamina elixirs or meals and launch yourself into the sky from the Lookout Landing Skyview Tower. Head north toward Hyrule Castle and glide until you land safely. With just one stamina wheel and a couple of elixirs, you should be able to reach the path outside the sanctum.
Proceed northeast around the castle while avoiding enemies when possible. The gloom puddles aren't too much of a threat here since you’re outdoors, so it’s safe to pass through them quickly.
Locate the Serutabomac Shrine marked on the map below.
Jump off the edge, deploy your paraglider, and drift around the northern side of the castle until you arrive at the designated spot.
Now you can enter the docks—but make sure to bring health restoratives and a speed elixir.
As you near the staircase leading away from the docks, you might notice a gloom puddle shifting position. Moments later, it will lurch toward you and sprout multiple arms—you are now facing a Gloom Hand. These appendages will grab you, draining one heart per squeeze and causing gloom buildup.
If you're attempting to get the Hylian Shield early, your best option is to run from the Gloom Hands. I threw six bomb flowers and shot several arrows from a Royal Guard Bow at them, but barely made a dent in their health. If you want to fight them, we have a guide on how to defeat Gloom Hands. Beware, though—when they are defeated, a Phantom Ganon will appear.
The staircase offers the quickest escape route if you can dodge the hands, but if not, retreat to the right through the narrow gap between the rocks and the stairs. You can briefly step into sunlight to restore hearts lost to gloom if needed. Otherwise, quickly climb up the wall and onto the platform.
Toss a fire Chu-Chu Jelly or a Fire Fruit into the large brazier. This will cause the Gloom Hands to disappear, revealing the chest containing the Hylian Shield.
Is the Hylian Shield worth it in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?
The Hylian Shield has a defense value of 90, making it one of the most powerful shields in Hyrule. Be sure to save it for critical battles or especially tough fights, as it is not unbreakable.
Should the Hylian Shield break, you can now purchase it again from Cece in Hateno Village. To do so, you must have completed The Mayoral Election quest to unlock her shop, and each time you buy it, it will cost you 3,000 Rupees.
Best of luck finding the Hylian Shield. And if you'd like to know more about Link's journey, check out our Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom walkthrough.
