Phantom Ganon can appear in one of three forms once Gloom Hands are defeated, each using a different weapon type. This means that no two encounters with Phantom Ganon will be exactly the same.
He’s a challenging opponent if you’re not ready for him, so here’s how to beat Phantom Ganon in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, whether he’s wielding a sword, spear, or club.

Preparing to face Phantom Ganon in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
After defeating a group of Gloom Hands, a Phantom Ganon mini-boss will spawn. He can deal heavy damage quickly, so it’s important to be well-prepared before taking him on.
Heart and armor requirements
During our battles, Phantom Ganon removed 4 and a quarter hearts per hit even with upgraded Hylian Armor, so we strongly suggest having at least five full heart containers before attempting to fight him. Also, keep in mind that the gloom aura around him can temporarily prevent healing by shattering hearts until the effect is cleared.
If you need to increase your heart count, visit a Goddess Statue and trade in Light of Blessings earned from completing Shrines. You can also exchange parts of your stamina bar for extra hearts at the demon statue located near the Emergency Shelter in Lookout Landing.
Get gloom resistance
The gloom surrounding Phantom Ganon can do damage over time and limit how many hearts you can heal. To counter this, bring meals that grant gloom resistance, which can be made using Dark Clumps dropped by Gloom Hands and other Phantom Ganons. These meals let you stay close during the fight without losing heart containers.
You can also cook dishes using Sundelions, which help restore shattered hearts, allowing you to heal past the broken point.
If you come across Bargainer Statues while exploring Hyrule, you can trade Poes for pieces of the Armor of the Depths set, which gives added protection against gloom.
Fuse a strong weapon
Before heading into battle, make sure you have a weapon with at least 30 attack power, ideally a spear so you can attack from a safer distance. While fighting with 30 attack power is manageable, anything higher makes the fight significantly easier.
Some of the best items for boosting weapon attack through Fusing include:
- Silver Lynel Bladehorns
- Silver Lynel Smashed Horn
- Diamonds
- Black Horriblin Horns
With the exception of Black Horriblin Horns, these ingredients are rare, so sorting your inventory by fuse power and selecting a high-value item should help. A strong base weapon like the Master Sword is ideal for fusing.
How to beat Phantom Ganon in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
Now that you're fully equipped and ready, it’s time to take on Phantom Ganon!
How to beat all Phantom Ganon forms
Phantom Ganon comes in three variations—sword, spear, and club—but the general strategy remains the same: jump backward while targeting with 'ZL' to trigger a flurry rush.
Press jump while holding back and targeting to consistently activate the prompt.
Between flurry rushes, stay close enough to prevent Phantom Ganon from performing a dash attack, but far enough away to avoid his gloom damage. That’s why a spear is highly recommended, as it allows you to strike without getting too close.
If Phantom Ganon charges at you with a dash attack, blocking with a shield is often the safest way to survive rather than trying to dodge.
Some players use a spinning technique with swords to circle around Phantom Ganon and chip away at his health while dodging attacks. If you try this method, make sure to equip something with gloom resistance to avoid being damaged.
These tips work for all forms, but each variation has unique movesets. Here’s how to handle each one:
How to beat club Phantom Ganon
Club-wielding Phantom Ganon has three main attacks:
- Single swing
- Jump slam
- Kick
Jumping back while targeting with 'ZL' works for avoiding all of these and triggering a flurry rush. The slam may look dangerous, but the same strategy applies.
Keep in mind that you cannot block the jump slam—you must dodge it.
Defeating club form Ganon rewards you with Dark Clumps, a Demon's King Bow, and a Gloom Club.
How to beat sword Phantom Ganon
Sword-wielding Phantom Ganon performs these attacks:
- Dash
- Single sword slash
- Charged sword slash
Watch for when Ganon raises his sword vertically (single strike) or horizontally (charged strike). Target with 'ZL' and start jumping back to avoid and possibly trigger a flurry rush.
Blocking is effective against his dash attack. Stay alert and react quickly.
Victory over sword form Ganon grants Dark Clumps, a Demon's King Bow, and a Gloom Sword.
How to beat spear Phantom Ganon
Spear-wielding Phantom Ganon uses:
- Dash
- Forward thrust
His spear lunge is harder to dodge compared to the other forms, making this version potentially the most difficult. If you want to attempt the spinning sword technique, this is the best form to try it on.

Beating spear form Ganon rewards you with Dark Clumps, a Demon's King Bow, and a Gloom Spear.
