How to prepare to fight Molduga in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

Here are some steps we recommend taking before engaging any Molduga in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom:

• Collect Bomb Flowers - These are incredibly useful, so it’s a good idea to stop by Gerudo Town and spend your Rupees on a few Bomb Flowers.
• Prepare Heat-Resistant Meals - Since the fight takes place in the desert, either cook meals that protect against heat or purchase heat-resistant clothing from Gerudo Town.
• Gather Strong Weapons - In Tears of the Kingdom, weapons break easily, so having multiple strong and fast weapons available will help when fighting the Molduga.
• Bring Extra Bows - While one powerful bow is usually enough for the Molduga, it’s crucial to have a backup bow in case the first one breaks.
• Stock Up on Arrows - Head to Gerudo Town or Lookout Landing and buy all the Arrows you can afford using your Rupees.

• The westernmost Molduga resides just north of Miryotanog Shrine, circling around some campfire smoke.

How to beat Molduga in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

Defeating a Molduga involves making it emerge from the sand. Just like in Breath of the Wild, this remains true in Tears of the Kingdom. Start by finding firm ground close to where the Molduga roams, if possible.

Don’t worry if no solid ground is available—it’s helpful but not necessary. If you’re standing on stable terrain, shoot an arrow into the sand near the Molduga to lure it toward that spot. As it approaches, throw a Bomb Flower onto the ground to blast the Molduga upward.

Quickly run toward the Molduga’s head—specifically its eyes—as this is its weak point. Strike it hard with your strongest weapon before it retreats underground again.

Repeat this process until the creature is defeated. That’s why bringing extra melee weapons and bows is important—you don’t want to run out mid-battle.

But what if there’s no safe ground nearby? Then the Molduga will charge directly at Link. If it hits you while emerging from the sand, and you have less than 10 Hearts, it could instantly kill you.

Alternatively, you can detonate a Bomb Flower directly beneath it while it's still buried. Another option is using a Time Bomb Zonai device aimed at the sand. The Molduga will be drawn to the bomb and caught in the explosion after a few seconds.

For skilled archers, launching a Bomb Flower at the Molduga mid-air as it jumps up can knock it back down, giving you a chance to strike.

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Molduga rewards

After defeating a Molduga, you’ll receive a variety of items related to the monster, similar to defeating Bokoblins or Hinoxes. These include the Molduga Jaw, Molduga Fin, and Molduga Guts. Unlike Hinoxes, Moldugas do not drop any usable weapons.

You can attach the Molduga Jaw to a weapon using Fuse to enhance its power, or use it in an Elixir recipe to extend the effect duration on Link. The Molduga Fin boosts the range of Arrows and Boomerangs when attached to a weapon.
