Pokémon GO Gigantamax Rillaboom counters, weaknesses and tactics

Jun 17, 2025 pm 03:45 PM

Gigantamax Rillaboom, the ultimate form of the Drummer Pokémon, is here in the world of Pokémon Go.

This is just one of two possible Grass-type Gigantamax Pokémon in Pokémon Go right now, with the other being Gigantamax Venusaur. It's a decent Pokémon, too, so you'll want to pick one up if you can.

Like all Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon, Gigantamax Rillaboom can’t be caught in the wild. You must first head to the relevant Power Spot and beat it in a Max Battle.

Below you’ll find Gigantamax Rillaboom’s counters and weaknesses to help you succeed in Pokémon Go. Once caught, you can use your Gigantamax Rillaboom in future Max Battles.

Gigantamax Rillaboom counters and weaknesses in Pokémon Go

In order to battle a Gigantamax Rillaboom, you first need to do three things:

Pokémon Go Gigantamax Rillaboom counters, weaknesses and tactics

  • Have 800 Max Particles
  • Have IRL friends who play the game or use a Remote Raid Pass
  • Find a Power Spot with a Gigantamax Rillaboom

The upside to doing Max Battles IRL is that this is obviously a money-saver for the player (travel notwithstanding). The downside is that you need to find people to play with in real life, rather than remoting in. As with previous Gigantamax battles, we strongly recommend travelling to an urban centre for a pre-arranged meet-up. You have little chance of doing this solo or with a small group in a rural area.

If you'd rather remote in, you should be aware of the following:

  • You need to use both a Remote Raid Pass and spend your 800 Max Particles, rather than just using a pass
  • You use the pass as soon as you start a Max Battle, regardless of the outcome
  • If you lose the battle and leave the lobby or the Raid rotates, you will effectively lose your pass

That said, don't worry if you fail the first time, you can simply re-enter the same lobby and try again. As long as you have enough Revives and Potions, you can keep trying until you run out of battery!

Below you’ll find the counters and weaknesses for Gigantamax Rillaboom to help you win the Max Battle:

  • Gigantamax Rillaboom types - Grass-type
  • Gigantamax Rillaboom is weak against - Bug, Fire, Flying, Ice and Poison-type attacks
  • Gigantamax Rillaboom is resistant to - Electric, Grass, Ground and Water-type attacks
  • Gigantamax Rillaboom top offensive counters - Perhaps unsurprisingly, Gigantamax Charizard (Wildfire) is your best bet. After that, you're looking at your Dynamax Fires and Fliers - Dynamax Darmanitan, Moltres, Cinderace, Entei or Unfezant.

Pokémon Go Gigantamax Rillaboom counters, weaknesses and tactics

Gigantamax Charizard and Dynamax Darmanitan are your top two attackers
  • Number of players to beat Gigantamax Rillaboom - As always, the more the merrier, up to a maximum of 40. Remember, you will be split into teams of four, so don't worry if you don't see everyone in your lobby! In your group of four, you should aim for two attackers, one healer and one defender.
  • Tactics - Dynamax and Gigantamax raids are a little more complicated than traditional raids in Pokémon Go.
First, be aware that your Fast move governs your Max move, so make sure to bring a Fast move that Gigantamax Rillaboom is weak against, if you can (ideally the one we suggest above).
If you're one of the attackers, you need to focus on using your Fast Move as much possible, to unleash your Max Attack as quickly and often as possible.
If you're out of fighters, and can leave that to someone who isn't, you should focus on either defending or healing your team. Your top defenders who can put up a strong Max Guard are Dynamax Corviknight, Gigantamax Charizard and Dynamax Butterfree, while Dynamax Blissey, Gigantamax Snorlax and Gigantamax Lapras are the best healers with Max Spirit. A little teamwork here goes a long way!
This means that your best team of four to defeat Gigantamax Rillaboom are: two Gigantamax Charizard, one Dynamax Corviknight and one Dynamax Blissey
  • Rewards for beating Gigantamax Rillaboom - For taking down a 6* Gigantamax Rillaboom, you will receive 25,000 Stardust, 25,000 XP, 1 Rare Candy XL, 30 Rillaboom Candy, 1 Rillaboom Candy XL and 10 Premier Balls. Don't forget to crack a Star Piece and a Lucky Egg beforehand if you want to maximise your Max rewards!
  • The Delightful Days season is nearly here! The Serene Retreat event is currently running and Gigantamax Rillaboom has arrived. You can now catch Dynamax Pokémon through Max Battles. First, however, you need to visit Power Spots to collect Max Particles and complete the To the Max! quest. Don't forget to try out Routes, Gift Exchange and Party Play while you're hunting down rare Pokémon, fighting in the Go Battle League or competing in PokéStop Showcases.

Unlike with Raids, there is no visible CP on a Max Battle boss. Instead, it just has a giant health bar that gets slightly smaller with each hit. It's also worth noting that because these battles take place in their own special arena, there is no weather boost available.

Below you’ll find the CP levels for Gigantamax Rillaboom in Pokémon Go:

    • CP range for catching Gigantamax Rillaboom - 1817 to 1899 CP
    • CP for perfect Gigantamax Rillaboom - 1899 CP

Best Rillaboom moveset in Pokémon Go

Gigantamax Rillaboom is currently one of two Grass-type Gigantamax Pokémon in Pokémon Go. Both are excellent - the main difference between the two is the typing, with Gigantamax Venusaur being a dual Grass/Poison-type. Beyond that, Gigantamax Rillaboom has a slightly higher attack stat (239 vs 198), meaning that you're going to want a decent Gigantamax Rillaboom if you like doing these raids.

That said, if you want to use your fancy new Rillaboom in Go Battle League, you are welcome to do so. Be aware, however, it won't be in its Gigantamax form! It's hardly fair for you to show up with an almost 92' (28m) gorilla to take down the opponent's Rattata, is it? If you want that in more normal terms, it's larger than the De Gooyer windmill in Amsterdam or half as tall as Nelson's Column in London.

However, you should note that Rillaboom was not built for Go Battle League - look at him, he was built to beat the hell out of the drums. All he wants to do is make a really big boom... oh we see what you did there, Pokémon Company. Anyway, it's straight awful in PVP, don't even entertain the thought.

Back to the topic at hand. You should run Razor Leaf (Fast) and Grass Knot (Charged). It's also nice to know that Gigantamax Rillaboom has a special move when maxed out: G-Max Drum Solo. It hits pretty hard...

Here are all the Fast and Charged moves Gigantamax Rillaboom can use in Pokémon Go:

    Fast Moves:

    • Razor Leaf (Grass)
    • Scratch (Normal)

    Charged Moves:

    • Grass Knot (Grass)
    • Energy Ball (Grass)
    • Earth Power (Ground)
    • G-Max Drum Solo (Grass)

    Everything we know about Rillaboom

The Heckin' Cute Monkey Chimp Pokémon, Grookey, is much loved as a starter Pokémon. Alongside Scorbunny and Sobble, they form the Gen 8 Starters. Grookey evolves into a badass drummer, Scorbunny evolves into a badass footballer and that's where we end this paragraph...

Pokémon Go Gigantamax Rillaboom counters, weaknesses and tactics

Interestingly, Grookey shares its category with another starter Pokémon, Chimchar. That said - and you know we're a stickler for this sort of thing - Grookey is clearly a monkey, not an ape. Look at that tail. When was the last time you saw a chimpanzee with a tail? Never, exactly.

Instead, Grookey is likely based on a macaque, with some squirrel monkey facial features. Macaques have been known to drum to show social dominance, further solidifying this link. Similarly, the name Grookey is most likely a portmanteau of groovy monkey. Again, monkey - not a chimp. Looking to the Japanese, Sarunori means 'Rhythm monkey', so we're starting to see a bit of a theme.

Sticking to the names that slap, Grookey evolves into Thwackey - that thing your little brother gets when you hand him a rolled-up magazine. The thwack monkey is officially the 'Beat' Pokémon, which is also pretty thematic. It uses its drumsticks as hair ornaments when not in use.

Finally, we have Rillaboom - famed for having the highest Attack stat among all of the fully evolved starter Pokémon. While we joked previously about its name being a really big boom, it's more likely to be a portmanteau of gorilla and boom. In Japanese, Goriranda is gorilla and batter, so it works.

While Rillaboom is pretty cool with its base drum on its back, its Gigantamax Pokémon is where it really gets cool. Not only does it get a full drum kit, we go full meme.

Where was Gen 8 set? Galar. Where is Galar based on? The UK. What did the UK make? Phil Collins and Cadburys Chocolate.

If you want to learn more about Grookey, Thwackey, Rillaboom and Gigantamax Rillaboom, you can read their official Pokédex entries below:

    • Grookey: 'The stick Grookey holds has grown harder and more flexible after soaking in the energy that emanates from inside Grookey’s body. As Grookey strikes everything in sight with its stick, it has more and more fun, and its rhythm becomes livelier.'
    • Thwackey: 'It skilfully uses its two sticks not only for drumming out rapid beats but also for pummelling opponents during battle. It becomes intensely focused while it drums out vigorous beats - so much so that sometimes it won’t listen to its Trainer’s commands.'
    • Rillaboom: 'Though it has a calm disposition, it won’t tolerate those who drum up discord. It strictly disciplines offenders until they learn their lesson. When one Rillaboom challenges another who leads a troop, a drumming battle commences. The victor becomes the troop’s new boss.'
    • Gigantamax Rillaboom: 'Gigantamax energy has caused Rillaboom’s stump to grow into a drum set that resembles a forest. Rillaboom has become one with its forest of drums and continues to lay down beats that shake all of Galar.'

It's also good to know that shiny Grookey is in the game, which means that shiny Gigantamax Rillaboom is in the game too! As you can see below, Shiny Rillaboom is fairly disappointing... it swaps its deep forest green for a lighter lime green. Its lighter panels around the pecs and hands are also greyish instead of the normal light brown. This is a real shame. For Gigantamax Rillaboom, this just looks like really bad uplighting...
