How to prepare to destroy Ganondorf in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
Ganondorf resides in Central Hyrule Depths, located far below the floating Hyrule Castle. Much like in Breath of the Wild, it’s technically possible to seek him out early on (though unlike that game, his location won’t be clear until you've progressed through the main story). Naturally, charging straight in without preparation will lead to a very difficult time — even before reaching the actual fight.
Before heading into Central Hyrule Depths, ensure you have completed the following:
- Finish all four champion’s quests by investigating the Regional Phenomena across each of Hyrule’s four regions, then awaken the five sages. These allies will play a crucial role during the final confrontation.
- Retrieve the Master Sword from the Light Dragon. The recommended way to do this is to reach the Lost Woods and defeat Phantom Ganon beneath the Deku Tree Chasm, triggering the Trail of the Master Sword quest. Not only does the Master Sword deal high damage, doubling against Ganondorf, but it can also be fused with materials for additional power.
- Visit every geoglyph in Hyrule and witness all the memories in the Dragon’s Tears to fully understand the story, which will help clarify the ending of the final battle.
- Complete as many Shrine quests as you feel comfortable with so that you have sufficient hearts and stamina to survive the final encounter. Having 20 hearts (the maximum displayed per row) is ideal, while at least two full stamina wheels are necessary to recover the Master Sword.
- Try to upgrade your best armor set at least once by encouraging a Great Fairy to emerge from her bud. If you can wear one of Link’s legendary tunics, even better.
- Upgrade the Purah Pad so you can use Travel Medallions. Reaching Ganondorf in Central Hyrule Depths is a long journey filled with threats. If supplies run low and retreat becomes necessary, using a Travel Medallion avoids having to repeat the entire trek.
You’ll also want to stock up on plenty of supplies for this last gauntlet. This doesn’t mean filling every inventory slot, but some key recommendations include:
- Prepare plenty of meals. Your biggest concern is that any attack taken in Central Hyrule Depths inflicts Gloom, reducing your max hearts. Therefore, the most essential meals are those that restore hearts damaged by Gloom, requiring Sundelions as an ingredient.
- Bring multiple shields. Defense, particularly parrying, plays a big role in the fight against Ganondorf, and since timing parries can be tricky, durable shields are a must—preferably ones with defense of 30 or higher. Don’t forget to track down the Hylian Shield!
- While the Master Sword won’t break during the fight with Ganondorf, it may lose power if used heavily in prior battles. It’s wise to carry strong backup weapons and fuse them with powerful materials beforehand. Parts obtained from defeating black or silver variant monsters, Lynels, or Gleeoks will serve you well.
- Have some potent bows ready and gather as many arrows as possible. You might also want to farm Bomb Flowers so you're prepared for large-scale destruction (30–40 is a good target).
- Here’s a bit of a cheat tactic—but if you’ve created any airborne contraptions, they can make the final fight incredibly easy. At the minimum, bring a supply of fans from Zonai Dispensers.
Once you feel confident and fully equipped, it’s time to descend to the deepest part of Hyrule for the final showdown with the Demon King, though first you'll need to handle his army.
How to defeat the Demon King’s Army in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
Prior to facing Ganondorf himself, you’ll first face waves of his minions—the Demon King’s Army. Fortunately, if you’ve awakened all the sages, the four champions and the fifth sage will assist you in this phase, so you won't be fighting solo.
There are four waves total, starting with corrupted Bokoblins, followed by Lizalfos, then Gibdos, and finally Moblins, with all four represented under one shared health bar.
When engaging enemies in close combat, ideally use another weapon instead of the Master Sword in case it runs out of energy just before the Ganondorf fight. However, the most effective way to eliminate these waves is with bombs, allowing splash damage to hit multiple foes. Although you could throw Bomb Flowers manually rather than fusing them to arrows to conserve ammo, aiming them at enemy heads ensures critical hits and more efficiency. Be mindful that enemies will charge toward you, so move away and keep distance before launching or firing Bomb Flowers to avoid getting caught in the blast radius.
Monitor the number of enemies, as sometimes picking off stragglers with a simple arrow fused with strong materials is more efficient. Shock-based attacks are especially effective against Gibdos. Since Riju will be fighting independently, you won’t be able to utilize her powers directly. Instead, fusing arrows with Shock Fruits will work effectively against both grounded and flying Gibdos.
If you wish to simplify this phase, activate a Zonai fan and use your Paraglider to get airborne. Then, have Link enter slow motion while aiming with his bow—either unleashing bomb arrows or targeting specific enemies.
Once the Demon King’s Army has been defeated, the battle isn’t over yet—you’ll now face corrupted versions of each of the main bosses previously encountered in the story: Colgera, Marbled Gohma, Mucktorok, Queen Gibdo, and Seized Construct.
If you haven’t faced any of these bosses by completing the main quests, you’ll need to tackle a boss rush here. However, if you’ve followed our suggestion to awaken all the sages, they’ll step in to assist, letting Link focus on the main event—the duel with Ganondorf!
How to defeat Demon King Ganondorf The Menace Unleashed phase in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
The initial stage of your battle with Ganondorf is straightforward, mostly free of gimmicks, allowing you to focus on learning his attack patterns and landing your own strikes.
Ganondorf primarily uses melee attacks, switching between three different weapons—a blade, a spear used for charging attacks, and a mace that delivers wave-based or area-of-effect attacks. Importantly, all of these moves are heavily telegraphed, giving you the chance to parry or dodge and counter accordingly, although mastering the timing will take practice.
Flurry Rush after a perfect dodge is the most effective counter since parrying risks wearing down your shields when blocking attacks, and the window to retaliate after a parry is quite narrow. Beware, however, that Ganondorf can also perfectly dodge your attacks, potentially countering with his own charge. This can be used to bait him into attacking if timed correctly.
One difficulty is that Ganondorf can perfectly dodge your Flurry Rush, sometimes forcing you to perform two consecutive perfect dodges before successfully landing a combo. Understandably, this takes practice and may result in taking hits, so make sure you have enough meals to recover from Gloom damage. On the bright side, if your defenses are solid, Ganondorf should only cost you one heart from Gloom damage per hit.
